Background of the Study

Indigenous arts and crafts are integral components of cultural tourism, providing a tangible representation of a community’s heritage, creativity, and identity. These artifacts serve as both souvenirs and educational tools, offering insights into the traditions and lifestyles of their creators. In Gombe State, the production of indigenous arts and crafts is a longstanding tradition, encompassing pottery, weaving, carving, and beadwork (Bello et al., 2024).

Tourism researchers emphasize the role of arts and crafts in creating unique tourism experiences. Handcrafted items often attract tourists seeking authentic and culturally rich products. However, the full potential of Gombe State’s indigenous arts and crafts in boosting local tourism remains untapped. Challenges such as inadequate marketing, lack of innovation, and limited access to international markets hinder their growth as a tourism driver (Aliyu et al., 2023).

Statement of the Problem

Gombe State’s indigenous arts and crafts industry faces numerous challenges that limit its impact on local tourism. Despite the state’s rich cultural heritage, there is insufficient promotion of its handcrafted products, resulting in low visibility among potential tourists. Moreover, the absence of training and capacity-building initiatives for artisans further restricts the sector’s growth (Usman, 2023).

Addressing these issues is crucial for leveraging indigenous arts and crafts to enhance tourism and create economic opportunities for local communities. This study aims to explore the relationship between arts and crafts and tourism development in Gombe State.

  1. To analyze the contribution of indigenous arts and crafts to local tourism in Gombe State.

  2. To identify challenges faced by artisans in promoting their crafts to tourists.

  3. To propose strategies for enhancing the role of indigenous arts and crafts in tourism.

Research Questions

  1. What is the contribution of indigenous arts and crafts to tourism in Gombe State?

  2. What challenges do artisans face in promoting their crafts to tourists?

  3. What strategies can enhance the role of arts and crafts in tourism?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Indigenous arts and crafts do not significantly contribute to local tourism in Gombe State.

  2. Artisans face no significant challenges in promoting their crafts to tourists.

  3. Strategies to enhance the role of arts and crafts have no significant impact on tourism development.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
